A Close Up of Friction Welding

“Friction welding already looks out of this world. I mean, watching two pieces of metal forge together through friction as they turn bright space orange? Awesome. But seeing friction welding in slow motion? That’s when we find out how truly spectacular the process is. The little sparks flying off the metal blocks look like stars being formed.”

Is Aluminum Welding an Ideal Option for Shipbuilding?

Aluminum alloys have been used for many years in the shipbuilding industry. There are two characteristics that make them particular [sic] useful: their light weight and their corrosion resistance in marine environments.

Many people think aluminum is much more difficult to weld than steel. This really isn’t true, but many people who are familiar with welding steel try to carry old habits when they become involved with welding aluminum. This usually doesn’t work well and is responsible for the perception that aluminum is difficult to weld.

Philadelphia Trains Have Faulty Welds

“Officials may have finally tracked down the source of the problem that put more than 100 SEPTA regional rail cars out of service. The maker of the new Silverliner V trains says it's due to faulty welds.

That weld is part of the suspension system, and involved a load-bearing beam. Now that the problem's been identified, the train manufacturer, Hyundai Rotem, says two possible replacements beams are being considered.”

Weekly Welding Roundup–Welding News

Brookdale Community College and Ocean County College (OCC) in New Jersey have moved 20 new welders from unemployment or unstable careers to new opportunities in the field of welding. One newly trained welder, Matthew Dolansky, had grown tired by the ups and downs of the construction industry. With his new welding certification, he is better positioned for steady jobs that start with a good hourly rate.

Most importantly, local businesses are starting to contact the college about their program, looking for skilled workers. Several graduates of the program had jobs lined up before completing, while several others already have interviews lined up.

Here’s the latest news from the welding industry:

Welding Industry

Wire-to-Wire Welding Process Developed

The ultrasonic metal welding technique, as employed by the Single Point Ground Welder and other Sonobond metal welding equipment, uses a welding tip to direct high frequency, ultrasonic vibratory energy to the surface between the metals being welded. That vibratory energy disperses the oxides and surface films between the work pieces, creating a true metallurgical bond. No materials are melted and no heat, current, fluxes or fillers are used, making the welding process particularly energy efficient and environmentally responsible.

Welding Company Offers Internship Program

“I think these welding students have to know their value. If students can learn a trade, they will never go hungry. Our company is always looking for welders. It sometimes takes eight months to fill a slot. I wanted to make it my mission to go into the class and talk to them about Covanta and let them know we are out there. There is a great profession waiting for them if they choose to pursue it. I want Eric and his students to know I will do everything in my power to help them,” Szott said.

Robot Welding Increases Production

“A leading supplier of rotor debarking machineryValon Kone has a long experience in robotized welding. In recent years, however, it became increasingly clear for the company that its production machinery was in need of an upgrade. ‘During the past few years, we have had some challenges owing to the long service life of our existing robotized welding station,’ Valon Kone Production Manager Jukka Jurvanen points out.”

Laser Welding Targets Automotive Industry

“Emag hosted an open house along with the launch of its new Laser Welding Laboratory June 8 at its U.S. headquarters in Farmington Hills, Michigan… The centerpiece of the new lab is the ELC 250 Duo compact laser welding system for machining gear components. This twin-spindle, two-station machine allows for loading and unloading the spindles during the cycle. Primarily targeting the automotive industry, the lab will provide services including weld-seam-design consultation, pre-turning and weld-prototype support, among others.”

Laser Welding for Medical Devices Offers Innovative Solutions

“A new laser welding system reportedly offers manufacturers, particularly of medical devices, the capability to achieve a clean, clear-on-clear, particulate-free, hermetically sealed weld. The new 3G Laser Welding System from Branson Ultrasonics, Danbury, Conn., is the result of a collaborative development effort with Sono-Tek, Milton, N.Y., a leader in ultrasonic spray systems for applying precise thin film coatings.”

Welding Job Demand Could Be Filled by Women

“While the overall number of students taking welding is minimal, the number of girls who complete the program is even less. Cearns said he averages one female student a year, and the average high school welding program enrolls between 5 and 10 percent of females annually. This leads to low numbers in the professional field as well, he said, with an estimated 5 percent of women in the welding industry.

With such high demand for skilled welders coming out of high school, instructors like Cearns, workforce development officials like Arthur and business owners are trying to pull more girls into welding programs.”

Farmers Open Welding Shop in Ontario

“A new metal fabrication and welding shop has opened in Nyssa by two long-time welders to serve the needs of local agriculture producers, providing needed implements and spare parts. Owyhee Metal Works is located at 325 S. First St., where First Street meets King Avenue. Wyatt Wood and Mike Garrett have been operating their business for about a week.”

The program continues to grow as Kory reaches female students who may not otherwise consider a career in welding if it wasn’t for a female instructor to show the way forward. Kory herself finally took the plunge into welding while studying Agricultural Education.

When asked about the experience of teaching alongside his daughter, Mike Fontes shared, "Having my daughter here, working side-by-side as a team has just been phenomenal."

Here’s a look at the rest of this week’s welding news:

Roundup of Welding News

A “Girls-Only” trade class at Oregon’s Sherwood High School attracted over 120 students, which was double the expected enrollment. The class is called “Imagine, Design, & Build It – No Boyz Allowed” and goes by the acronym NBA.

Girls-high-school-welding-class

The class, which has been offered since 2009, teaches girls about welding, computer technology, and woodshop. Although women make up 3% of trade workers in America, the classes have provided a supportive environment for young girls who want to learn more about trades and to get a jumpstart on a future career.

In fact, many girls begin to plan out their careers by the time they reach junior high, so the timing of this girls-only course is particularly critical in helping them plan their future. Instructors have found that girls tend to defer to boys in mixed environments. A girls-only class provides opportunities for girls to build confidence and to experiment with new trades.

As welding continues to provide new job opportunities for men and women, there’s a notable increase in education opportunities for welding jobs.
